The vision of STREAMS IN THE DESERT was given to Helen Mears in 1994. At that time she was volunteering as a nurse with elderly and sick new immigrants, most of whom were from the former USSR, in an absorption centre (a converted hotel) in Jerusalem.

Elderly people were living in shared rooms unable to unpack their boxes and bags of possessions.

Most of them cooked in their rooms on one hot plate as there was only one kitchen for every 20 rooms.

They had very little hope of finding their own place to live, even if they could get out and about, due to the high cost of renting small apartments.....
